Everybody plays everybody twice, once at home and once away, and so it's easy and fair to compare clubs to one another. While I do give credit to success in the Champions League, I tend to give it less than some because some of the success comes from luck of the draw. For instance, in this year's edition, either Manchester United or Inter Milan will fall in the Round of 16 even though it's hard to argue that the loser won't be better than at least a few clubs that advance. Tottenham and Manchester United were both on the list for achieving UEFA qualification. Tottenham are higher that year than Aston Villa the following year. It is only by virtue of its Champions League performance that it managed to be ranked at all.
