WCR Top 25 Clubs in the World - Final "Weekly" Edition of Season

Welcome to the final “weekly” version of the rankings for the 2010-11 season.  We waited an extra day to publish these rankings because the most important of the few matches that were played this week in domestic league action took place Monday night in Argentina.  There, three different clubs could have finished the weekend atop the Argentine Clausura, but in the end, Vélez Sarsfield remained at the apex with two matches to go.

The major matches of the week took place in the Copa Libertadores.  There, Vélez Sarsfield’s luck was not nearly as good as it was eliminated in the semifinals by Uruguay’s Peñarol despite the Argentine club’s 2-1 victory.  Not all of the news was good for Peñarol, either, as a loss in Uruguay’s Primera División means left it tied for third in that competition and knocks them out of the rankings, at least for now.

The club rankings will return in three weeks, after the conclusion of the Copa Libertadores.  By that time, this site will have moved its location to Argentina, so we will have a little more coverage of the action.  We will also have some coverage of the Copa América, which starts soon and will be played in Argentina this year.

Speaking of international action, we are working on our own international rankings that will be updated on a monthly basis.  Why?  Because we have some time to kill and we love numbers.  Also, what else are we going to do this time of year when club action is almost nil?  Anyway, you’ll see more about that in coming posts.  For now, enjoy the final weekly version of the rankings for this season.
