We’ve been focusing recently on international football with the recently completed Gold Cup and soon-to-begin Copa América, but of course our focus always on club football. For years, we’ve been known for our weekly rankings of clubs around the world.
In the past week or so, we have seen the conclusion of the 2010-11 season as Santos defeated Peñarol to win the 2011 Copa Libertadores and book its ticket to the 2011 Club World Cup. Here in Argentina, the even bigger news was River Plate’s descent into Nacional B after losing a 2-game set with Belgrano in its relegation playoff and, as I’m sure you’re aware, the riot that ensued in the Nuñez barrio in Buenos Aires. Gotta love football in Argentina!!!
Since just a few large domestic leagues continue through the North American summer (e.g., Russia, Brazil, United States), these will be the final rankings of the 2010-11 season. We will be back in late-July with our fourth annual pre-season rankings, to be followed soon thereafter by a return to the weekly rankings. We will also be back in a few days with the latest installment of the newly-created International Club RPI Rankings. For now, however, enjoy the final WCR Club Rankings of 2010-11.
