Weekend Soccer on TV - 21/22 May 2011

Well, here we are.  The final regular season weekend of the season, at least as far as most of Europe is concerned.  The top three leagues in Europe, and probably the world, all conclude this weekend with Spain’s La Liga finishing on Saturday and the English Premier League and Italian Serie A closing out on Sunday.

Since most of the matches in each league are played at the same time (because European clubs and referees aren’t to be trusted to play fair?), much of the action will be shown on a delayed basis and/or online on ESPN3.  Still, there will be some live action on American television, though the choices of the networks regarding those matches to be broadcast are curious at times.

We won’t be publishing a “Top Five Matches of the Weekend” this weekend because the matches that are of the most interest mostly involve clubs that are battling in the relegation fights in England and Spain and I refuse to focus the list on the worst clubs in each league.  If we had a number one match of the weekend, though, it would be the one battle involving two WCR Top 25 Clubs – AC Milan and Udinese will play on Sunday in a match that could very well decide whether Udinese will qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Outside of the big three domestic leagues, there are some other matches.  The 2011 Brazilian Serie A season gets underway this weekend.  Perhaps most importantly, the final match of the Mexican Clausura takes place on Sunday as Morelia and Pumas UNAM fight it out for the half-season championship.

Unfortunately, I’ll miss most of Sunday’s action because I’ll be on a plane to Dublin, but the rankings will be back next week in plenty of time for the UEFA Champions League final next weekend.  As for this weekend, have a great one!!!
