2009 WCR Club of the Year - Coming Soon . . .

If you’ve been following this blog since it began in the early 1960s, then you know that the original data, the original formulas, the original sins were all done in order to bring you the annual list of the Annual WCR Top 25 Clubs in the World. This season will be the fiftieth for which the data has been manipulated and the formulas have been applied to come up with the ultimate statement on who the top clubs in the world are for the past year. Most of these annual rankings have been published here in these rankings and can be found in the Annual Rankings tag.

The club that finishes at the top of the annual rankings get the coveted title of WCR Team of the Year. If you recall, and I’m sure you do, Manchester United took the title of 2008 WCR Club of the Year, giving the Red Devils two titles in a row.

The bases for the annual rankings have been published in these pages many times before. Basically, the data that is used is the most recently completed season data for each club’s domestic season (2008-09 for most, 2009 for some) and the results from the most recent continental championship (2008-09 UEFA Champions League, 2009 Copa Libertadores). The results are not meant to be a snapshot of the current condition of the football world – that can be found in the weekly rankings – but is meant to be a continuation of the annual looks at clubs around the world. If you’d like to know more about the bases for the rankings, I invite you to take a look at posts in the Principles and Purposes category of the blog.

So who is going to finish in the 2009 WCR Top 25 Clubs in the World? Will Manchester United take a third consecutive title as WCR Club of the Year? Or will the title fall to Champions League victors Barcelona? How about Estudiantes de la Plata, Copa Libertadores champions from Argentina? As always, the annual rankings will be published during the last few days of December. Don’t forget to check in then to see who will finish in the annual WCR Top 25 and be sure to vote on the side on who you believe should win.
