Now that Barcelona has been crowned Champions of Europe, the weekend action on television is dwindling. There still will be a reduced schedule this week, but after this week there will be very little to show. That also means that this week will mark the conclusion of the Top Five Matches of the Weekend segment in the weekly schedule, but we still plan to bring you schedules for future weekends, even though there won’t be much to bring.
This weekend can be broken into two major categories – season finales and cup finals. As far as season finales go, Spain, Italy and France all finish their regular domestic seasons this weekend. There is little drama involved, though, there still is a little in France, where Bordeaux can clinch a Ligue Un title if it can manage a draw or better against Caen. If it fails, the door is opened, ever so slightly, for Marseille who still can sneak in for a championship with luck and a victory over Stade Rennes.
In cup action, there are finals going on in England, Scotland, German and Portuguese (and maybe more). The biggest of these is, as usual, the English FA Cup, which features two clubs in the WCR Top 25 in Chelsea and Everton. While the cup would be a big deal for Everton, it is merely consolation for a season with so much promise for Chelsea.
There’s also a lot of South American action, but I won’t write too much about that since it will feature so heavily in the next several weeks. Of note, however, just to the north is the second leg of the Mexican Clausura championship, which sees two of the most exciting Mexican clubs in recent years, Pachuca and UNAM Pumas, face off for the title.
It should be great, if fleeting. As always, have a great weekend!!!
