A week or so ago, I set forth the general guidelines for the annual WCR Top 25s. You can click on that link if you want additional information, but basically, unlike the weekly top 25s, the annual version is not a snapshot of current form but, rather, looks at the last complete season for each league and each continental tournament. Because of this, great deference is paid to the semifinalists and better of the last completed UEFA Champions League, Copa Libertadores and CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Last year’s entry was entitled “You Voted and I Listened” because I set up a poll and the viewers picked the same club that the numbers picked as the Team of the Year – Manchester United. United followed up that “title” by winning the Premiership and UEFA Champions League in 2008, narrowly defeating Chelsea in both. Surprisingly, Manchester United currently is receiving less than 40% of the vote. They won the Premiership, UEFA Champions League and the Club World Cup. What exactly else would you like them to win before you accept them as the club of the year?
In the Copa Libertadores, LDU Quito surprised the world, or at least that part of the world in the southern and western hemisphere, by taking the title from Palmeiras and delivering it to Ecuador. Pachuca, despite a disappointing regular season in Mexico, took a second consecutive CONCACAF Champions Cup title, defeating Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica in the finals. Joining those champions in the Club World Cup were CAF champion Al-Ahly and Asian titlist Gamba Osaka. In the Club World Cup final, the Europeans made it two in a row as Manchester United defeated LDU Quito 1-0 in the final.
Below is the WCR Top 25 of 2008. Along with the rankings, I am providing information on how each club performed in its most recent complete seasons and tournaments. I’m sure there will be some arguments, but I haven’t really cared in any of the past annual rankings and I don’t care much about this one. Please read this prior to bitching and then feel free to bitch away, if you so desire. Enjoy!!!
