Hail, hail the gang’s all here!!! Finally, all of the top domestic leagues are under way and all of the WCR Top 25 Clubs are in action this weekend except for Manchester United, who plays Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Super Cup on Friday, so you can’t hold that against the weekend.
Not only are all of the clubs in action this weekend, more than half of them will be on American television. It will make for some tough choices as you may have to choose between Werder Bremen and Everton, Schalke and Arsenal, Chelsea or Roma, Bayern Munich or Liverpool and Juventus or Real Madrid. Thank the heavens for Tivo!!!
There is one matchup this weekend in which WCR Top 25 Clubs go head-to-head. That takes place on Sunday afternoon when Fiorentina hosts Juventus. The two most intriguing matches beyond that are not being televised, however. In Portugal, Porto hosts Benfica and in Glasgow, Celtic will host Rangers. I’m sure you can find a local watering hole that will let you watch the Celtic/Rangers derby for a $20 cover charge, but, frankly, I’d rather watch Chelsea for free.
In addition to what I currently have listed below, ESPN 360 will broadcast numerous Italian Serie A games. Once I have a list of the games that it will broadcast, I will add those games to the schedule.
As far at the Top Five Matches of the Weekend are concerned, I was torn among six matches. I’d love to put the Chicago Fire / Houston Dynamo match on the list, but since it isn’t being nationally televised for free, I decided to leave it off. I’m putting the Rangers and Porto matches on the list because of their importance, but the fact that they are not televised keeps either from being number one.
