Back in February, I took all of you at your word and sided with you when it came to predicting the outcome of the Champions League knockout round. How did we do? Well . . . not so well. We hit four out of eight correctly, missing on Porto, Inter Milan, Sevilla and Real Madrid.
Now, here we are for the Champions League quarterfinals and I have to decide if I still trust you. The answer . . . of course I do. You wouldn’t lie to me. I can tell by the look in your eyes. I trust you. So, based on your votes and the WCR Top 25 Clubs rankings, who are we choosing in the Champions League quarterfinals?
Barcelona (Esp) over Schalke 04
This is the matchup that you are most certain about, with 88% of the vote going to Barcelona. Even though Schalke is making their first trip to WCR Top 25 this week, I’m not as positive as the rest of you. Barcelona has looked a little off recently while Schalke has climbed into third place in the Bundesliga. All that talent should be too much for Schalke to overcome, however, and I’m going Barcelona 5-2 over Schalke in the aggregate. (I learned my lesson about picking individual games last time.)
Manchester United (Eng) over Roma (Ita)
78% of you think this is the likely outcome of the most anticipated matchup (as far as I’m concerned) in the quarterfinals. I thought this was going to be the toughest, closest matchup of the round until Totti got injured. Now, I think Manyoo has a definite advantage and I am picking them here. Aggregate: Manyoo 4 Roma 3.
Chelsea (Eng) over Fenerbahce (Tur)
In a battle of two teams that are playing well at the right time, 74% of you choose Chelsea to advance. That sounds about right to me. Fener has been playing very well as has found its way to the top of the Turkish Ligi. Meanwhile, Chelsea has passed Arsenal for second place in the Premiership and are playing some of their best football of the season. Aggregate: Chelsea 4 Fenerbahce 1.
Arsenal (Eng) over Liverpool (Eng)
Despite the fact that both clubs picked up much needed victories this weekend, neither has been particularly impressive in the past month. 70% of you pick Arsenal over Liverpool and I think you are correct, if only because Arsenal has a slight personnel advantage over ‘Pool. I agree that this will be the closest matchup of the quarterfinals. Aggregate: Arsenal 3 Liverpool 3 (Arsenal winning on away goals.)
